I realize it’s over a month until the first day of spring, but don’t tell the gardening community. Portland Gardeners are frothing at the bit to get into their gardens and play. What is driving this gardening frenzy? I think it’s the weeks of sunny weather, combined with the early spring bulbs popping up their pretty little heads, and the onslaught of Home and Garden shows. This week is the premier Northwest Flower and Garden Show in Seattle, Wednesday February 5th – Sunday, February 9th. Next week is the Portland Home and Garden Show; running Wednesday, February 19th thru Sunday, February22nd at the Expo Center. The Yard, Garden and Patio Show will be at the Convention Center the following week; Friday, February 27th thru Sunday, March 1st.

What’s the big deal about the shows? The answer, my friend, is inspiration. We’re all looking for inspiration to take the next step forward in our gardens, be it a full renovation or just finding the perfect bit of garden art for that forgotten corner. Each  of the shows are full to the brim with inspiring gardens, new gadgets, informative speakers, gorgeous plants, and plenty of professionals ready to chat about their area of expertise.

Visiting Seattle is an occasional treat for me, but I seldom miss either of the Portland shows. The Portland Home and Garden show has four buildings of displays. Two and a half of them are dedicated to the garden. It’s got plenty of information on kitchens, baths, home improvement, and interior decorating as well. Their seminars cover both the inside and outside of your home.

The Yard, Garden, and Patio Show – Portland

The Yard, Garden and Patio Show, focuses solely on the garden. Many of our local garden gurus such as Sean Hogan, Maurice Horn and Amy Whitworth will be speaking, as well as garden celebs from Seattle and beyond. Check out http://www.ygpshow.com for a complete list of speakers and topics. You can get more information about the Northwest Flower and Garden Show at http://www.gardenshow.com/ and the Portland Home and Garden Show at http://www.otshows.com/phs/.

Whichever show you choose, go and get inspired and then get in the dirt. That’s where the fun is.
