After our boys had left the nest and we bought a coffee farm in Hawaii, Brian and I decided to sell our big beautiful country home. I searched for a small rental in our daughter’s school district that would meet our needs, and have a garden that I could renovate. I found a charming little home on an eighth of an acre in East Hillsboro. The owner was happy to let me redo the landscape in exchange for a small reduction on our rent. I totally redid the garden for less than $2000 and lots of help from friends. I had a joyous time creating an exuberant cottage garden. We only lived there for 2 and a half years. The perennials I’d transplanted from our previous home filled in with gusto.
